Why is anti homosexual feeling found so acceptable?

I posted a question recently asking if I could campaign on behalf of homosexuals, and I mentioned my low opinion of those who would dislike\hate homosexuals. One response (and I don't know who he speaks for) told me that my support wouldn't be wanted or welcome because of that fact. I'm actually surprised and taken aback by that point, because I know people (who are homosexuals, and who aren't) who are fantastic people, who REALLY BELIEVE (God how I hate that phrase) in the homosexual cause and would probably side with me. Am I just being insensitive? Or am I right that this is cliquery?
